RI need prioritize Venezuelan issue on UNSC emergency meeting’s agenda

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia, assuming presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for May, should give due weightage to the Venezuelan issue, placing it high on the Council’s emergency meeting agenda soon, an international law expert stated.

“What is transpiring in Venezuela should be highlighted at the UNSC meeting since it poses a threat to world peace,” international law professor of University of Indonesia (UI) Hikmahanto Juwana noted in a written statement released on Thursday.

Juwana did not eliminate the likelihood of involvement of other nations or elements in the abortive coup d’etat in Venezuela.

Several governmental heads have frequently drawn sharp reference to what is taking place in the Latin American country, he pointed out.

“In a bid avert new tensions from posing a threat to international security, it is logical for Indonesia to appeal to the UNSC to deliberate on what is taking place in Venezuela,” he noted.

As an elected member of the UNSC, Indonesia has taken over from Germany the UNSC presidency post for May after the European nation held the post for April 2019.

In alphabetical sequence, every UNSC member has an opportunity to hold the UNSC presidency post and lead its meeting for a month-long duration. Indonesia, along with Germany, Belgium, South Africa, and the Dominican Republic, officially took their spots as the UNSC non-permanent members early this year, with their memberships being effective until December 21, 2020.
