Jakarta is calm and stable: Anies

Jakarta (ANTARA) – DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said that after the 21-22 May 2019 demonstrations, conditions in Jakarta were relatively calm and stable, different from the events of 1998.

“What happened in 1998 throughout the region in Jakarta was rioting in various places. Then, there were shops and malls that were looted. That did not happen yesterday,” said Anies, while monitoring the Jalan Thamrin area in Central Jakarta on Thursday.

He explained that the actions of May 21-22 were only demonstrations and clashes confined to the Tanah Abang area to Slipi, and in the Jalan Thamrin area so, in general, Jakarta remained stable.

The governor asked the public in the Jalan Thamrin area to return to their normal activities, and said that shops and shopping centers could reopen.

“Yesterday, outside the region, besides in Thamrin, Slipi, and Petamburan, lives were being led as normal. We continue the activities as usual, so the economy moves along well,” Anies said.

He stressed that Jakarta is the capital for all, therefore residents of Jakarta and outside Jakarta can move about here, but Jakarta does not welcome rioters.

“We will welcome those who come to perform normal activities in Jakarta, but if you want to riot, you will face us all and we will not tolerate this,” said Governor Anies.

Anies advised those who come to riot that Jakarta would be ready and act decisively against all riots here.
